Biology as a team sport April 13

"A picture is worth a thousand words", and in biology, that picture is even more valuable if the image contains chemical information that can be used to understand cellular mechanisms or diagnose disease. If healthcare professionals can better image tissue samples then advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment are possible.

Two experts from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) - Kris Kulp, Deputy Group Leader of the BioAnalytical Group, and physicist Kuang-Jen Wu - will introduce how teams of biologists, chemists, physicists, and statisticians are using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to image individual cells and tissue sections. Being able to discern small changes among similar samples allows scientists to understand changes that occur within cells during injury or progression toward disease.

Kulp and Wu will discuss the basics of imaging mass spectrometry, what it is and how it works, and LLNL’s progress in imaging cells and tissues for biomedical applications, with a focus on cancer diagnosis and prognosis.
