Brian Johnson, Cal State East Bay Accessibility Services counselor and CSUEB alumnus, and his wife Rebecca McCormack Johnson, a former counselor in the same department, can't wait to become parents. Having a biological child is not possible for the Johnsons, so they are pursuing open adoption.

“Because neither of us felt that having a biological child is a necessity, we were able to get off the fertility treatment treadmill relatively quickly and change tactics," said Rebecca in an interview with the San Ramon Patch.

The Johnsons have chosen the path of open adoption, in which the birth parents choose the adoptive family and have an ongoing relationship throughout the years.  Research shows that open adoption serves the best interests of adopted children, birth parents, and adoptive parents by boosting self-esteem, confidence, trust, and understanding between all members of the adoption triad. They are working with the Independent Adoption Center in Pleasant Hill, which has been a pioneer of best practices in fully open adoptions for over 25 years.

“Our goal as parents will be to provide our child with opportunities to discover his or her own identity, beliefs, talents, passions, and strengths – whatever those may be,” said the couple.

Best wishes, Brian and Rebecca. We hope you adopt a new little Pioneer soon!
