RAW Center remains open during repairs to temporarily closed gym

  • March 7, 2012 1:00pm

Due to flooding that occurred Monday, the gymnasium within the Recreation and Wellness Center has been closed temporarily. RAW Center workout facilities remain open to members, and all fitness classes and Health and Wellness Center programs will continue as scheduled.

A kicked soccer ball struck and broke a sprinkler head under the southwest corner of the track Monday night, releasing water that covered most of the basketball court.

Representatives from damage restoration company Belfor Monday assessed the damage to the gymnasium floor and will begin repairs soon. An estimated date when the gym will reopen has not been determined.

Intramural sport leagues have been suspended until further notice, and the gym will remain closed until RAW Center staff members understand the full extent of the damage, said Krista Smith, director of the RAW Center.

Smith added that her staff will work with university colleagues to identify alternate spaces where players will be able to finish out the intramural season.
