The Cal State East Bay Athletics Department is set to celebrate its Read With the Pioneers participants at the Jan. 12 basketball games against Cal Poly Pomona in the Pioneer Gym.  This year’s 448 participants collectively read 205,000 pages.

The Read with the Pioneers Program works to encourage at-home reading among Hayward-area elementary school students. During the month of November, participants keep a log of the number of pages they read and report their totals to teachers at the end of the month. Over the past three years, the reading program has grown from just 20 participants at one school to more than 400 at four local schools. This year’s participants included Harder, Fairview and Burbank Elementary Schools, as well as St. John Catholic School.

For more information on the Read with the Pioneers Program or to get your school involved for next year, contact Dawn Ellerbe at dawn.ellerbe@csueastbay.edu.
