Christopher Moreman, associate professor of philosophy, at Cal State East Bay, recently published a three-volume collection on the Spiritualist religious movement. His book, The Spiritualist Movement: Speaking with the Dead in America and around the World (Praeger 2013), contains perspectives drawing upon fields as diverse as psychology, sociology, religious studies, anthropology, history, ethnic and gender studies, literature, and art.

The publisher’s Web site explains: “Based on the belief that the dead can communicate with the living through mediums, Spiritualism touches concepts as timelessly fascinating as human mortality and the continuing existence of the soul beyond bodily death. This comprehensive work will help readers parse the mysteries of this uniquely American religion through three thematically organized volumes: Spiritualism in the U.S. and Globally, Evidence and Beliefs, and Cultural and Social Issues.”

Moreman, an expert in comparative religion, has written and been interviewed on the topic of zombies and popular culture for major news outlets.  Two of his previously published books - Zombies Are Us: Essays on the Humanity of the Walking Dead (McFarland, 2011) and Race, Oppression and the Zombie: Essays on Cross-Cultural Appropriations of the Caribbean Tradition (McFarland, 2011) - discussed the “walking dead’s” popularity from zombie origins in Haitian folklore through the 1960s countercultural revolution to inclusion in current vernacular.
