CSUEB sociology prof pens new memoir, 'Cleft Heart: Chasing Normal'

Karl Schonborn, professor emeritus of sociology at Cal State East Bay, will be signing copies of his new book,Cleft Heart: Chasing Normal, this weekend. Reconnect with him on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 11:15am to 12:30pm at the Orinda Bookstore or Sunday, Oct. 27 from 11:15am to 12:30pm at the Orinda Community Church.

In his memoir, Professor Schonborn shares his personal coming-of-age story of being bullied as a child for his unintelligible speech as the result of a cleft-palate and his inability to play sports due to a heart defect.  He survives prejudice, violence and family tragedy to eventually use his voice to teach over 10,000 students during a 37-year teaching career at CSUEB.
