L'Ecole des femmes was first staged in Paris on December 26, 1662, and scored an immediate and lasting success. Moliere played Arnolphe; Armande, his bride of less than a year, played Agnes. While we are repeatedly warned today against reading private meanings into Moliere's plays, we may at least note that the situation, the problem of an ardent middle-aged lover and the bride he has trained from babyhood, was Moliere's own.
