Pre-Professional Health Academic Program (PHAP)

Formal (Post-baccalaureate students only)

Our program has had a long history of helping students achieve their dream careers in the health professional fields. The formal post-baccalaureate program is geared towards assisting students interested in future careers of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary science, and other health-related professions. We require that students have obtained their bachelor’s degrees from accredited four-year institutions before matriculating into the program. Students completing the program are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion in Pre-Health Sciences upon finishing all required coursework and unit specifications.

Some highlights of the program include:

  1. Two separate academic tracks to better address students’ unique backgrounds:
    • Academic Enhancers: A career enhancement program which allows students to focus on upper division science coursework. Students best suited for this track usually have taken most or all of the lower division science prerequisites, including inorganic chemistry with laboratory, organic chemistry with laboratory, general physics with laboratory, general biology with laboratory, and often Calculus I.
    • Career Changers: A career changing program which allows students to pursue an alternate career path in a health professional field. Students best suited for this track may have yet to complete many of the lower division science prerequisites, have pursued a non-health or non-science career prior to the program, or have prerequisites which may be outdated (typically 5-7 years old by the time they apply to biomedical schools).
  2. Faculty advisers for individualized career and application assistance: Our experienced faculty, all of whom teach in the program, hold weekly individualized advising appointments for students.
  3. Small class sizes: Our courses are exclusive to program students, and we offer a variety of courses on both our Hayward and Concord campuses, with class sizes kept to a minimum to allow for individualized attention to each student.
  4. Peer advisers for career and application support: We believe that experienced peers can be an approachable source of support and information, and we offer pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-optometry, and pre-veterinary peer advisers to all students each quarter.
  5. Designated tutors for offered courses: In addition to small class sizes and academic advising office hours, students are offered an additional resource in the form of peer tutors for each course.
  6. Pre-health guest speaker seminars, personal statement and applicant’s workshops (1-2 units): These seminars allow easier networking among postbacs, collegiality with shared objectives and mission.
  7. Complete standardized testing support: For MCAT, DAT, and OAT at a highly subsidized rate.
  8. Assistance in extracurriculars: These include volunteering, health internships, research opportunities, and summer enrichment programs.
  9. Leadership opportunities: Students are encouraged to participate in many program-centered pre-health organizations to continue developing their leadership skills.
  10. Cohort-centered peer support: Because admitted cohorts are small and tight-knit, students often develop strong camaraderie with students of their admitted cohorts much like how healthcare professionals peers work together to improve individual and community health.
  11. Committee Interviews and Committee Letters: Students who complete the program are eligible to sign up for mock-interview sessions with our faculty and, for specific programs, request Committee Letter Packets in support of their applications.

Informal (CSUEB undergraduate students only)

For aspiring pre-health students entering into CSU, East Bay as undergraduate students, PHAP offers a variety of resources and can help assist students with finding the right resources including career counseling, academic guidance, and personal statement assistance. The first step in tapping PHAP’s services is for the undergraduate student to meet with their assigned academic adviser in their respective department. The academic adviser will then recommend the student to PHAP for additional pre-health advising if necessary.

Often, through academic advising undergraduate students may be recommended to join the formal program after completion of their bachelor’s degrees, for additional academic enhancement and other academic resources. The road to health professional careers can be convoluted, and our experienced faculty and peer advisers offer great sources of information and support regarding admissions and application timelines. These resources are also available for prospective applicants or students pursuing their second bachelor’s degree.
