Graduate Information

Academic Regalia

All ceremony participants are required to wear full academic regalia consisting of a traditional black gown and mortarboard with tassel.  Master’s and doctoral candidates will have a black gown, hood, and cap with tassel. Regalia will be available for purchase at Grad Fest.

Flowers, Leis and Commemorative Class T-Shirt

Order bouquets of flowers, leis and class t-shirts for Commencement. 

Graduation Day Flowers is the official sales provider of flowers, leis and commemorative graduation t-shirt for our ceremonies. Commencement flowers will be available at each college ceremony on the Hayward campus or you can order online to ensure your items will be available at your ceremony.


Diplomas are not distributed at commencement. The university issues diplomas after verifying that all academic requirements have been completed and the degree has been awarded. Diplomas are mailed approximately 8 weeks after the degree is awarded to the address indicated on MyCSUEB.


Graduation Workshops

Cal State East Bay offers Graduation and Commencement Workshops beginning approximately 3 months prior to the annual commencement ceremony in May. Attend a workshop to learn how to avoid delays in your graduation, what to expect when you are close to graduation, important commencement ceremony details, and more!

Cal State East Bay recognizes undergraduate students at graduation for consistently high scholarship through their entire academic careers, which includes coursework they may have transferred in from other institutions. 



GradImages is the official commencement photographer for our school. Your proofs will be ready to view online as soon as 48 hours after the ceremony as long as you provided a valid email or mailing address. If you have not received your proofs, please email or contact customer service at 800-261-2576 and they can assist retrieving your photos.


Effective Sept. 1, 2017, in order to promote the health of faculty, staff and students, and to foster a campus atmosphere that is safe and supportive of students’ learning endeavors, the university is banning the use of all tobacco and nicotine-based products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, electronic devices and more. The smoke and tobacco-free environment extends to all buildings and indoor and outdoor structures on Cal State East Bay’s three campuses. Read the full details on Executive Order 1108.


Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited before, during and after commencement. Drinking and misconduct by even a few would be disturbing to the graduates, faculty, and guests who expect and deserve a safe, orderly, and dignified ceremony. Any graduate who appears to be intoxicated will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.  Guests who appear to be intoxicated will not be allowed entrance into the stadium or live-stream viewing sites.  Further, any guests appearing to be intoxicated or causing disruption will be removed from the campus.

Cell Phones

Please silence personal electronic devices during the ceremony.


Only service animals are permitted at commencement or on the university grounds on ceremony days. Service animals need to be clearly identified. No other animals are permitted.

First Aid

An emergency first aid station will be set up on the stadium field and at the top of the stadium. Look for signage on commencement day.

Local Weather 

Please check the local weather forecast to be best prepared. The weather can be very warm, and there is no shade available at the commencement site.  Please feel free to wear hats, visors and sunglasses, and apply sunblock.  It is extremely important to bring provisions for children, persons with special needs, and the elderly, as there will be limited food and beverage sales.

In Case of Inclement Weather or Excessive Heat 

The ceremony will go forward even in the event of rain or excessive heat. Please note the ceremony may be abbreviated to ensure the safety of all graduates, guests, faculty and staff.  Speeches could be omitted from the program and names may not be able to be read
