Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the California State University, East Bay is the home of the Geology and Environmental Science programs. Located on the tectonically active Hayward fault, we offer a variety of opportunities for students to obtain experience in lab- and field-based studies. We are a small department that prides itself on a feeling of community. Small class sizes guarantee close interaction between students and faculty, with personal attention at all levels.

Welcome Message From the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at CSU East Bay! We offer a number of degrees and programs in our department, including bachelor's degrees in environmental science and geology, a master's degree in environmental geoscience, a minor in geology, and degree concentrations in geoscience education and environmental health. All of the faculty and students in our department love to study various aspects of the Earth and the environment in which we live. We also think a lot about human impacts on the environment, and how the environment itself impacts human health. Our department faculty study rocks and soils, earthquakes and plate tectonics, water, environmental contamination, climate, and the atmosphere, and we welcome and encourage student participation in research. Our graduates are all over the Bay Area and beyond, working to protect people from geologic hazards, to provide safe and secure water supplies, and in many other fields. We pride ourselves on being approachable and friendly, so if you're a prospective student, a current student, or you're just interested in what's going on, stop on by the office and say hello.
