InSTEM Mentorship Program

The inSTEM Mentoring Program is a four-year mentorship and professional development initiative offered through a partnership between the National Science & Technology Medals Foundation (NSTMF) and the Institute for STEM Education’s Career Awareness and Preparation (CAP) program at California State University, East Bay. inSTEM is designed to support first-year and continuing undergraduate STEM majors — particularly those from underrepresented communities — with the skills, community, and guidance they need to graduate with a STEM degree and pursue post-baccalaureate opportunities.

About the Program

Now in its third year at CSU East Bay, inSTEM creates a supportive network where students build confidence, academic strength, and professional readiness through a structured curriculum, mentorship, and cohort-based experiences. The program addresses the national challenge of STEM attrition by fostering belonging, and persistence in STEM Fields.

Who Can Apply

The program is open to all first-year STEM majors at CSU East Bay who are interested in strengthening their academic and professional paths in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Applications for the current cycle are closed, but recruitment for Fall 2026 will begin soon — stay tuned for updates

Program Goals

inSTEM supports undergraduates by:

  • Building a community where students explore diverse experiences and perspectives in STEM.

  • Providing professional development activities tailored to academic and career success.

  • Connecting students with mentors and role models both on and off campus.

Program Structure & Components

Participants in inSTEM engage in a comprehensive experience that includes:

• A Four-Year Curriculum:
Each year builds upon the last, guiding students from establishing core academic and wellness foundations to preparing for post-graduation opportunities. Themes include CORE (Year 1), THRIVE (Year 2), RISE (Year 3), and SOAR (Year 4).

• Cohort Community:
Scholars join an intimate cohort of 10–15 students led by faculty/staff coaches, fostering peer support and collaboration.

• Biweekly Professional Development:
Participants attend regular seminars designed to enhance career readiness, networking, and academic skills.

• Mentorship:
Each Scholar is paired with a STEM professional mentor from the broader community who provides guidance, encouragement, and career insight throughout the undergraduate journey.

• Financial Support:
Scholars receive a $1,000 stipend per semester beginning Fall 2026 (formerly $300 per semester) to support academic engagement and participation in the program, along with student success resources such as success kits.

Why inSTEM Matters

Research shows that mentorship, community building, and professional support increase STEM retention and success — especially for students from underrepresented groups. Through its holistic design, inSTEM helps scholars develop practical skills, expand their professional networks, and persist in their STEM majors toward graduation and beyond.
