Admission Process

Prior Degree Work

  • You must hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed four years worth of college-level work.
  • Applicants from countries with three-year bachelor’s degrees (and no subsequent studies) can seek admission to the 4th-year-bridge program, which involves taking additional undergraduate classes at Cal State East Bay before entering the master’s program.

Admission Criteria

  • There is no one profile that we’re looking for, but your academic (or, if applicable, professional) record should indicate prior exposure to an analytical discipline and basic to intermediate proficiency in mathematics and statistics.
  • Typically (not always), entering students will have taken intermediate-level economics classes before, as well as calculus.
  • Most admitted students have GPAs well above 3.0, but we consider recent results or specific circumstances you might explain in your statement.
  • If you feel confident that you can succeed in a graduate economics program, you should apply and tell us why.

How to Apply

  • The MS Economics program accepts applications for entry in the fall or spring semester. Deadlines are listed graduate and credential students application and document. Contact cbe_grad@csueastbay.eduwith any questions.
  • Applications are submitted online through the Cal State Apply. There is an application fee.
  • Taking a standardized test, such as the GMAT or GRE, is optional at this point. A good score on the quantitative part (> 75 thpercentile) can be a strong point in your favor. Photocopies of score reports are acceptable, subject to verification at our discretion.
  • International students must also submit TOEFL (at least 213 computer-based or 92 internet-based) or IELTS (at least 7) scores if they do not hold a bachelor’s degree from an English-speaking institution.
  • Resumes, letters of recommendation, or work samples are also optional. Mail any additional materials you wish us to consider to the above address (or e-mail to cbe_grad@csueastbay.edu).
  • Official transcripts from educational institutions you list in your application are sent to:
