The STEM LAB is a community learning space that connects students with undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) and graduate Teaching Associates (TAs). Operating both on-campus and online, the STEM LAB is here as a resource to help you succeed! Students are encouraged to drop-in with questions, meet with study groups, or hang out and work on homework. Check the website for exact days/times when there will be an LA available to help with your specific course: www.csueastbay.edu/stemlab. Looking for a place to study or meet with your classmates? The STEM LAB open study hours are:

  • In-person: Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm (SC-S 142 and SC-S 149), Friday 9am-12pm (SC-S142)

Faculty FAQ

The LA program is an embedded peer support program that focuses on supporting faculty & students both in and out of the classroom.
Learning Assistants are undergraduate students who were previously successful in the course and are now embedded in a section of that course as support.

LAs are a resource for faculty implementing active learning and a source of feedback from the student perspective. LAs engage in four main activities:

  1. Attend every class session and interact with students in class.
  2. Provide drop-in support for students in any section of the course in the STEM LAB.
  3. Host a study session for the students before each exam.
  4. Participate in various training and professional development: Pre-semester Orientation, Biweekly LA Staff Meetings, Biweekly Course Conversations with faculty and TAs, and weekly Pedagogy Workshops during the first 7 weeks as an LA.

Faculty members and TAs with an LA should engage in four main tasks:

  1. Build a safe environment for continued collaboration and feedback (it is “our” class).
  2. Use materials that facilitate active learning in order to utilize the LA during class time.
  3. Engage with LAs in biweekly STEM LAB Course Conversations.
  4. Regularly check in with the LA for feedback from the previous week and prepare them for the upcoming week.

There are several peer academic support resources available to CSUEB students!
