Inaugural CSU Nursing JEDI Summit

Nursing program staff, graduate students, and faculty from throughout the CSU system are invited to submit proposals for the inaugural CSU-wide summit on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) in nursing, which will be held June 2-3, 2022 on the Cal State East Bay Hayward campus and online.

The purpose of this event is to bring together staff, graduate students, and faculty from across the CSU nursing ecosystem. As author Arundhati Roy stated, “a pandemic is a portal.” The overlapping crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and various systems of oppression have laid bare what nursing is capable of, what nurses navigate, and the need for systemic transformation so that communities everywhere can be healthy and safe. Given the ongoing pandemic and recent release of the New Essentials of Nursing Education, Scope & Standards of Practice, and Future of Nursing Report, let us take this opportunity to forge and strengthen relationships, discuss our experiences and the challenges we navigate, and collectively strategize the future of nursing in and through the CSU system.

  • Provide rich opportunities for professional development for both faculty and staff in relation to program implementation, instruction, service, professional development, assessment, clinical site onboarding, and program policies for robust and sustained JEDI efforts.
  • Build new and strengthen existing relationships among colleagues across the CSU Nursing system, including, but not limited to, speciality areas, programs, and particular roles (staff, committee chairs, faculty advisors, course leads, chairs, deans, assistant directors, graduate program coordinators, simulation coordinators, skills lab coordinators, clinical placement coordinators, student nurses association advisors, etc.)
  • Discuss topics such as faculty governance, the New Essentials of Nursing Education, the Future of Nursing Report, and, AB1407.
  • Share and discuss recent efforts, evidence, and scholarship focused on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI); including, but not limited to, admission policies and practices and culturally sustaining curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Affirm and hold space for nurse educators from historically excluded communities who have navigated and carried a disproportionate amount of labor and cultural taxation.
