Internships

Internship at the Lunar and Planetary Institute

The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) invites undergraduates with at least 50 semester hours of credit to experience research in the planetary sciences. As a summer intern, you will work one-on-one with a scientist either at the LPI or NASA Johnson Space Center on a research project of current interest in planetary science. The Summer Intern Program allows participants to experience a real research environment, to learn from top-notch lunar and planetary scientists, and to preview careers in science.

The 10-week program runs from June 2 to August 8, 2008. You will receive a $5000.00 stipend plus housing and a $1000.00 travel expense reimbursement.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships

This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engeineering because of the nature of the experience. Studnets work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closesly with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with the NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its posessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

The Physics Laboratory at the national institute of Standards and Technology has a 12-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program providing hands-on research experience in Atomic, Molecular, Optical, Radiation and Chemical Physics.

Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars

The Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) Program is managed for NASA by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium under the auspices of the National Institute of Aerospace. The LARSS program is a 10-week summer internship at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) that benefits rising undergraduate juniors and seniors, and graduate students who are pursuing degrees in auronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, computer science, atmospheric science, astrophysics, physics, chmistry or selected aerospace disciplines of interest to LaRC.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Summer Internships in Science and Technology

Fermilab selects approximately fifteen college students to participate in the Summer Internships in Science and Technology (SIST) program each year to help us develop a richer understanding of the fundamental properties of matter. This internship program has been developed to familiarize select college students with opportunities at the frontier of scientific research and to provide experiences that support their choice of science as a career. Interns receive a salary related to the class level that has been completed before coming to Fermilab.

Society of Physics Students Internships

SPS internships are broad-based learning opportunities for undergraduate physics majors in the area of scientific research and outreach/policy. Students are placed in organizations and agencies in the Washington, DC area such as NIST, NASA, AIP, AAS, AAPT, APS, etc. These organizations utilize the energy and diversity of aspiring students and contribute to t heir professional developement though meaningful assignments, both relevant to teh institution's programs and in the advancement of physics or allied sciences. Participating organizations also assign one or more mentors to guide the interns' work and overall experience.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Internships

internship programs strive to provide opportunities that provide meaningful work experiences while incorporating education and training activities. Students have an opportunity to contribute to the Laboratory's mission while working with state-of-the-art equipment and instruments.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Internships

LBNL's Center for Science and Engineering Education offers research fellowships to undergraduate students through a number of venues. No matter what program (or source of funding) an undergraduate participates through, all students come together in the Berkeley Lab Undergraduate Research Program.
