Catalog Description

Fundamental design techniques for VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated) circuits. Theory of implementing complex integrated circuits on a microchip. Use of computer aided design tools. Prerequisites: CS 3430 and CS 3432

Course Description:

Course is an introduction to the simplified VLSI integrated circuit design techniques pioneered by Mead and Conway. It focuses on digital design, starting with single gates in NMOS and CMOS and culminates in they study of integrated computer components in VLSI. It includes hands-on experience in CAD.

Using CAD software, students learn to:

  • select from library of circuit designs
  • design original simple circuits
  • check adherance to design rules
  • validate designs through logic level, function level, and electrical characteristic simulation
  • refine designs through critical path analysis
  • replicate a refined circuit to generate arrays

Students will:

design simple circuits using Magic and Spice from UC Berkeley tool suite design complex circuits directly from high level functional descriptions, using OCT tools suite

Assignments include six designs:

  • single gate
  • MSI combinational circuit
  • PLA
  • flip-flop
  • MSI sequential circuit
  • complete simple microprocessor
