Message from the Chair

Julia Olkin, Ph.D.

On behalf of the Department of Mathematics here at CSU East Bay, I welcome prospective and current Math majors and minors, students taking classes in Math, or anyone with an interest in Math. I’m proud of our dedicated faculty and staff, the sense of camaraderie and community from our instructors and students, and the impromptu math conversations that take place regularly. Our students find help through the STEM Lab, a gathering place for peer-to-peer support and working together; they find connection through the Math, Mingle, and Munch social gathering every semester; and financial help through opportunities such as scholarships, grader positions, Learning Assistant positions, and Teaching Assistant positions. Almost every faculty member is actively involved in research and we prioritize creating opportunities for our students to engage in learning outside the classroom.

Mathematical reasoning and quantitative thinking are the building blocks of STEM. Our programs are designed for a diverse student population with a diverse set of goals, whether it be to join the workforce, become a teacher for K-12 or Community College, or continue their education at the graduate level. We welcome you at whatever level you are at, and will help you achieve your goal.
