Determining Eligibility to Participate in Commencement

Credential candidates are invited to participate in commencement activities provided they finish all coursework by the end of spring semester. More information about the ceremonies can be found on the CSUEB commencement.

In order to be eligible to participate in commencement activities, credential candidates must be completing all credential coursework by the end of the spring semester in the year of the commencement ceremony. You may have outstanding non-curricular credential requirements remaining, e.g., RICA test, CPR, etc… If you are completing a “credential-only”, you must purchase undergraduate regalia (cap, gown, and tassel) in order to participate in the ceremony. If you are completing a degree and a credential, you must purchase the regalia associated with your degree program and line up with your degree department. You may only walk once across the stage during the ceremony.

The Credential Student Service Center (CSSC) provides a list of eligible credential participants to the Records Office. Eligibility is based on your progress toward completing your credential courses. Keep in mind that listing your name is not a confirmation of your eligibility for the credential. If you are unsure of your credential requirements, please consult your program handbook. If you are finishing your credential program, please submit your credential completer application towards the end of your final semester in the program.

If you are seeking a degree and a credential, you will be listed twice in the commencement booklet, once for your degree and once for your credential. CSSC is only responsible for the credential listing. See your degree department regarding questions about your degree requirements.

Graduation Filing Fee

Credentials are not degrees; the credential is granted by the State, not the university. Therefore, credential-only candidates do not pay a filing fee if they wish to participate in commencement in recognition of their credential completion. The graduation filing fee is tied to when the student files for graduation, so there is no charge until the student files for the master’s (or other university-granted) degree.

If you are a degree-seeking student, please check with your respective degree department for commencement eligibility information.
