Research Security

Overview

Research Security encompasses federal requirements and institutional practices designed to ensure the transparency, integrity, and security of research activities, particularly those supported by federal funding.

U.S. federal agencies—including NSF, NIH, DoD, and DOE—are implementing new and evolving Research Security requirements. These focus on disclosure of funding, affiliations, and outside activities, as well as increased oversight of research collaborations.

These requirements are now a standard part of the sponsored research process and will continue to expand over time.

Impact on Sponsored Projects

Research Security requirements affect multiple stages of federally sponsored projects, including:

  • Proposal submission
  • Award management
  • Ongoing compliance and reporting

Non-compliance may result in delays, additional review, or inability to submit proposals to federal agencies.

Key Requirement

Research Security training must be completed prior to proposal submission to any federal agency.

This requirement applies to researchers participating in federally funded projects and is part of broader federal compliance expectations.

Training and Resources

What to Expect

  • ORSP Pre-Award will request confirmation of completed Research Security training at the time of proposal submission
  • Proposals may not proceed without confirmation of required training
  • Additional requirements may be introduced as federal guidance continues to evolve

Ongoing Updates

Research Security requirements are actively developing. This page will be updated as new federal guidance becomes available and institutional processes are refined.
