Foreign Travel Liability Insurance Program (FTLIP)

Purchase of Foreign Travel Liability Insurance for all foreign trips as a cost effective and prudent method of providing for financing of the specialized risks related to foreign travel.  Program coverage is primary with no deductible, thereby protecting the existing University insurance programs from increased claims and filling the “deductible gap.”  Program coverage should meet or exceed common limits and provide primary coverage, even if the student has no health insurance.

The California State University Risk Management Authority (CSURMA), in conjunction with AIG Worldrisk developed the FTLIP program to address the potential for losses related to foreign travel and to provide travel assistance for university employees and students.  The following should clarify the reasons for acquiring the FTLIP insurance.

Liability, Automobile Liability and Workers Compensation - Existing university general liability and automobile liability insurance includes worldwide coverage up to $1,000,000 but the risk pool does not have the resources to address litigation brought in foreign countries.  For workers’ compensation, there is no coverage for third party nationals who may be deemed by foreign laws to be employees.  Excess accident and illness coverage for both staff and students is provided at much greater limits than other available policies.  Extensive traveler’s assistance is included.
