Reenvisioning an instructional design system
Published: Month Day, Year
Online Campus is partnering with academic departments to reenvision how instructional design support is organized and delivered. The goal is to provide a more coordinated, sustainable system that supports quality, accessibility, and student success across online and hybrid courses.
Why a system approach matters
As more programs include online and hybrid options, the need for consistent instructional design support has grown. A system approach helps:
- Align course design practices with program goals and learning outcomes.
- Share models, templates, and resources that save faculty time.
- Ensure accessibility and quality standards are integrated from the start.
- Support continuous improvement across multiple courses and programs.
Key elements of the evolving model
The instructional design system centers on collaboration between Online Campus staff, department leaders, and faculty. Emerging elements include:
- Consultation pathways for new online or hybrid courses and program redesigns.
- Shared Canvas templates and examples that reflect Cal State East Bay’s expectations for quality and accessibility.
- Workshops, office hours, and just-in-time support focused on specific design challenges.
- Partnerships with student support units so that advising, tutoring, and library resources are visible within courses.
Impact for faculty and programs
Faculty benefit from clearer starting points, access to instructional design expertise, and support for implementing new tools or teaching strategies. Programs benefit from more coherent student experiences across courses and clearer alignment with program-level learning outcomes.
