Expanding Student Support for Online Learners
Cal State East Bay continues to expand services that help online and hybrid students succeed. Through partnerships between Online Campus, academic departments, and student support units, more services are available in formats that work for students who learn from different locations and schedules.
Strengthening advising and academic support
Many advising and academic support services now offer online appointments and virtual drop-in options. Online learners can meet with advisors, receive help choosing courses, and discuss degree progress without needing to travel to campus.
- Academic advising and success coaching for students in online and hybrid programs.
- Online tutoring and writing support, including options for evening or weekend hours when available.
- Workshops on topics such as time management, study strategies, and planning for graduation.
Connecting students to library and research help
The University Library provides extensive support for online learners, including remote access to databases, e-books, and journals, as well as options to meet with librarians for research help.
- Online research consultations with subject librarians.
- Chat and email support for questions about finding articles or using databases.
- Guides and tutorials designed with online courses and programs in mind.
Supporting accessibility and inclusive learning
Online Campus collaborates with Accessibility Services and campus partners to promote accessible course design and provide accommodations for students with disabilities. This includes support for accessible course materials, captioned media, and assistive technologies.
- Guidance for faculty on creating accessible documents, media, and Canvas content.
- Coordination with Accessibility Services for student accommodations in online courses.
Building community in online and hybrid programs
Online and hybrid courses use tools such as Canvas discussions, group projects, and video meetings to create connection and community. Departments are also exploring virtual events, orientation sessions, and peer-to-peer supports designed for online students.
