Canvas and Technology Help

Canvas and technology help for online students

Canvas is the learning management system used for online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses at Cal State East Bay. This page provides quick access to Canvas login options, 24/7 technical support, and recommended technology and browser settings.

If you are new to online learning, we also recommend reviewing How to succeed in online courses.

Canvas login and basic help

  • Canvas login: Go to the Canvas login page and log in using your CSUEB NetID and password.
  • Where courses appear: Once logged in, select Dashboard to see your current courses. Some courses may not appear until the instructor publishes them.
  • Mobile access: You can install the Canvas Student app on your phone or tablet for quick access to announcements and assignments.
  • Check course announcements: Instructors often use Canvas announcements for important updates and reminders.

24/7 Canvas support

Canvas offers round-the-clock technical support for students. Use these options if you have trouble logging in, viewing course content, submitting assignments, or taking quizzes.

  • 24/7 Canvas phone support: Call the Canvas help line listed inside your Canvas Help menu for immediate assistance.
  • Canvas live chat: Use the Help button inside Canvas to start a live chat with Canvas support.
  • Canvas guides: Visit the Canvas student guides under the Help menu for step-by-step instructions and videos.

Technology and browser requirements

Having the right technology and keeping your software up to date will make online learning smoother and more reliable.

  • Device: A laptop or desktop computer is recommended. Some activities may not work well on mobile devices alone.
  • Internet: A stable, high-speed internet connection is strongly recommended, especially for video and Zoom meetings.
  • Supported browsers: Use a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Avoid using outdated browsers or Internet Explorer.
  • Updates: Keep your operating system, browser, and apps updated to the latest versions.
  • PDF and media: Make sure your device can open PDF files, play videos, and use audio.

Getting started checklist

Before your online or hybrid course begins, use this checklist to prepare your technology and course access.

  1. Log in to Canvas and confirm that you can access your Dashboard.
  2. Check that your enrolled courses are visible once instructors publish them.
  3. Test your internet connection, webcam, and microphone.
  4. Install the Zoom app and sign in with your CSUEB account if your courses use Zoom.
  5. Review your course syllabi and add important dates to your calendar.
  6. Bookmark this page and other key technology resources you use often.

Zoom and media tools

Many courses use Zoom and other media tools for live sessions, recorded lectures, or group work.

  • Zoom for classes: Check your Canvas course for Zoom links and meeting information provided by your instructor.
  • Test Zoom ahead of time: Make sure your audio and video work before class meetings or online presentations.
  • Recording policies: Follow your instructor’s guidelines and campus policies about recording classes.
  • Headset or headphones: Using headphones reduces background noise and makes it easier to hear and be heard.

Troubleshooting and security

If something is not working, try these steps and then reach out for help if needed.

  • Basic troubleshooting: Try a different browser, clear your cache, or restart your device.
  • Check campus status: If you suspect a campus-wide issue, check for announcements from Cal State East Bay.
  • ITS Service Desk: Contact the Information Technology Services (ITS) Service Desk for help with NetID, passwords, and campus accounts.
  • Keep your account secure: Never share your password and log out when using shared or public computers.
