How To Succeed in Online Courses

How to succeed in online courses

Online and hybrid courses at Cal State East Bay are designed to be flexible and engaging, but they also require strong study habits, time management skills, and regular communication with your instructors.

Use the strategies on this page to set yourself up for success in fully online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced classes. Combine these tips with the resources on Online student resources and your course Canvas sites.

Plan your term

Successful online learners treat their courses like a regular, structured commitment. Start each term with a clear plan.

  • Read the syllabus carefully. Note due dates, exam windows, required materials, and participation expectations.
  • Map key dates. Add assignment deadlines, quizzes, and exams to your calendar (digital or paper).
  • Set weekly study blocks. Block regular times for each course, just as you would for in-person classes.
  • Identify busy periods. If you anticipate conflicts (work, caregiving, travel), communicate early with your instructors.

Manage your time

Online courses give you flexibility, but it is easy to fall behind if you do not schedule your work.

  • Use a weekly to-do list. Break large assignments into smaller tasks and spread them across the week.
  • Follow the “3–1 rule.” Plan at least two to three hours of study time each week for every unit of credit.
  • Avoid multitasking. Focus on one course or task at a time for short, intentional sessions.
  • Set mini-deadlines. Give yourself earlier internal due dates so you can revise or ask questions if needed.

Stay engaged and connected

In online courses, staying active and visible helps you learn more and feel more connected to your instructors and classmates.

  • Participate regularly. Post in discussions, attend scheduled Zoom sessions, and respond to class activities.
  • Check Canvas and email often. Log in several times per week and review announcements and messages.
  • Ask questions early. Use Canvas inbox, office hours, or discussion forums to clarify instructions and expectations.
  • Build a study routine. Study in the same place and at the same times when possible to make learning a habit.
  • Use your camera when appropriate. When possible and comfortable, turning your camera on can increase connection, but it may not be required. Follow your instructor’s guidance.

Use technology effectively

Reliable technology helps you participate fully and reduces stress. If you have questions, visit Canvas and technology help.

  • Log in early. Make sure you can access Canvas, your CSUEB email, and any required tools before the term starts.
  • Test your equipment. Check your internet connection, webcam, microphone, and speakers or headset.
  • Use supported browsers. Keep your browser updated and use recommended options for Canvas (such as Chrome or Firefox).
  • Update your devices. Install updates when it is convenient, not right before an exam or live session.
  • Have a backup plan. Identify a second device or campus computer lab you can use if your primary device fails.

Well-being and balance

Online learning offers flexibility, but it can also blur the boundaries between school, work, and home life.

  • Establish a dedicated study space. Choose a comfortable, distraction-reduced space when possible.
  • Take regular breaks. Short breaks to stretch, walk, or get water help you refocus.
  • Set boundaries. Share your study schedule with family, roommates, or coworkers when you can.
  • Reach out if you feel overwhelmed. Advisors, instructors, and campus support services can help you navigate challenges.
