Getting started and staying on track
As an online or hybrid student, you will use a combination of MyCompass, MyCSUEB, Canvas and other campus tools to manage your academic journey. Use the resources below to get set up at the beginning of the term and to stay on track throughout the semester.
- MyCompass portal: Access your personalized student dashboard, including quick links to MyCSUEB, Canvas, email, and other tools.
- MyCSUEB: View your class schedule, update personal information, check holds, and review your financial account.
- Online learning tips: Visit Online Learning Tips for strategies on time management, communication with instructors, and staying engaged in online classes.
- Student support and services: Use Online Student Support and Campus Services as a hub to connect to campus offices and programs that support your success.
Canvas and technology help
Canvas is the learning management system used for most online and hybrid courses at Cal State East Bay. You will log in to Canvas regularly to access your course materials, assignments, and grades.
- Canvas login: Go to Canvas login and sign in with your NetID and password.
- Canvas and technology help: Visit Canvas and Technology Help for information about supported browsers, devices, and troubleshooting tips.
- 24/7 Canvas support: Use the Canvas Help options inside Canvas (phone, chat, or guides) if you need technical help with the system at any time.

Managing your academic progress
Staying on top of degree requirements and deadlines is especially important in online and hybrid programs. Use these tools and services to monitor your academic progress and plan ahead.
- Degree roadmaps and catalog: Use the University Catalog and your program roadmap to understand your major requirements and course sequence.
- MyCSUEB: View your academic requirements, unofficial transcript, and class schedule to track your progress toward graduation.
- Academic advising: Connect with your college or department advisor through the Academic Advising and Career Education site or your major’s advising page.

Tutoring and academic support
Academic support services are available to online and hybrid students in multiple formats, including virtual appointments and online resources.
- Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA): Get tutoring, writing support, and supplemental instruction. Visit the SCAA for schedules and appointment information.
- Writing support: Work with a writing tutor on papers, discussion posts, and other assignments, either synchronously or through online feedback options.
- Math and subject tutoring: Access tutoring for math and other subjects offered through SCAA and department-based support programs.

Library and research support
The University Library provides extensive online services and resources for students who are learning at a distance.
- Library website: Start at the University Library to search for books, articles, and media.
- Databases and e-resources: Access databases, e-books, and online journals from off campus using your NetID and password.
- Research help: Use chat, email, or virtual appointments with librarians to get help with research topics, citation styles, and search strategies.
- Course reserves and guides: Look for course research guides and any online course reserves your instructor has arranged.
Well-being and basic needs
Your well-being is essential to your academic success. Online and hybrid students can access campus support services for mental health, health care, and basic needs.
- Counseling services: Visit Counseling Services for mental health support, workshops, and crisis resources.
- Student Health and Counseling Services: Learn about primary care, wellness services, and health education for enrolled students.
- Basic Needs support: Explore food, housing, and financial support resources through the campus basic needs programs.

Staying connected and informed
Staying informed about campus announcements and connected with your instructors and classmates is an important part of succeeding in online courses.
- Check Canvas and email regularly: Log in to Canvas and your Horizon email several times per week to review announcements, assignments, and feedback.
- Use course communication tools: Participate actively in discussion boards, group work, and messaging tools specified by your instructor.
- Student support and services: Use Online Student Support and Campus Services as your starting point to find the right office for your question.
