Online learning tips and expectations

Online courses at Cal State East Bay are designed to be flexible and accessible, but they also require consistent engagement and self-direction. This page provides tips and expectations to help you succeed in fully online and hybrid classes.

Time management and planning

  • Review each course syllabus early and write down all major due dates and exams.
  • Estimate how many hours per week you will need for each course, including readings, discussions, assignments, and study time.
  • Create a weekly schedule that includes specific blocks of time for each class, and treat those blocks as appointments with yourself.
  • Break larger assignments into smaller tasks with mini-deadlines so they feel more manageable.
  • Use reminders, to-do lists, or calendar alerts to keep yourself on track.

Participation and communication

Communication is critical in online courses, especially because you may not see your instructor or classmates in person.

  • Log in to Canvas regularly to check announcements, messages, and new materials.
  • Participate fully in discussions, group work, and other interactive activities. These are often part of your grade.
  • Ask questions early if something is unclear. Use Canvas inbox, discussion boards, or virtual office hours as directed by your instructor.
  • Practice professional and respectful communication in emails and online discussions.
  • Let your instructor know if you are experiencing challenges that may impact your coursework.

Study strategies for online courses

  • Take notes while watching lectures or reviewing online content, just as you would in a face-to-face class.
  • Test your understanding by explaining key ideas in your own words or teaching them to someone else.
  • Study in short, focused blocks of time with breaks instead of long, distracted marathons.
  • Use campus resources such as tutoring and library services to support your learning.
  • Stay organized by keeping your files, notes, and assignments clearly labeled for each course.

Staying motivated and balancing responsibilities

Many online students balance school with work, family, and other responsibilities. It is normal to feel overwhelmed at times.

  • Set specific short-term goals (for example, “finish this module by Wednesday” or “draft my paper by Sunday”).
  • Build in rewards when you complete tasks, such as a break, a walk, or time with friends or family.
  • Stay connected with classmates through discussions or study groups to build community and accountability.
  • Reach out for support early—advisors, tutors, instructors, and campus services are here to help you succeed.
