Getting Started

Getting Started with Online Learning

Whether you are taking one online class or completing a fully online program, this page will help you get ready to use Canvas, understand expectations, and connect with support.

1. Activate your NetID and check your Horizon email

  • Make sure your NetID is activated and you can log in to campus systems.
  • Check your Horizon email regularly for messages from your instructors and campus offices.

2. Log in to Canvas

Canvas is the official learning management system used for online, hybrid, and many on-campus courses.

  • Go to the Canvas Login page and sign in with your NetID and password.
  • Your courses will appear on the Canvas dashboard once instructors publish them, usually close to the start of the term.

3. Review your syllabus and course homepage

  • Read the syllabus in each Canvas course carefully, including due dates, participation expectations, and grading policies.
  • Explore the course homepage and navigation menu to see how your instructor has organized modules, assignments, and discussions.

4. Check your technology and learning environment

  • Use a reliable computer and internet connection. A laptop or desktop is recommended for most online coursework.
  • Keep your browser updated and use a supported browser for Canvas (for example, current versions of Chrome, Firefox, or Edge).
  • Set up a quiet space for studying, if possible, and plan regular times each week to log in and complete course work.

5. Learn how to use Canvas features

In Canvas you will typically:

  • View modules, pages, and readings
  • Submit assignments and quizzes
  • Participate in discussions
  • Check grades and instructor feedback
