Marriage

Marriage may never take place without the payment of a bride price by the man's family to the family of the woman. In the majority of cases marriages are arranged, often at birth, with the degree of allowance for change varying from culture to culture. However there are quite a few examples, such as the Bontok, where the man and woman choose each other as adolescents; and often it is the woman who initiates the relationship. While among the rich there is usually more allowance for concubinage and other non-monogamous arrangements, marriage is generally an egalitarian venture with regard to the sexes, and divorce may also be initiated by either party. Marriage is not generally entered into without performing several formal procedures during the "engagement." It is also a strongly religious matter.
