Tables

What Are Tables Used For?

Tables are used to present organized data. Tables are used as simple data tables with header cells, followed by rows or columns of data. They should never be used for layout purposes because layout tables can result in unorganized reading order and difficult for individuals using assistive technologies.

How To Make Tables Accessible?

All tables in the CSUEB's website must be accessible. To make a table accessible, the table must have Header for each column or row defined. In addition, the table must have a Caption that provides a short description for the content presented in the table. A table's caption provides information to Assistive Technology users to navigate and understand the table's content through listening aids.

"The purpose of data tables is to present tabular information in a grid, or matrix, and to have column or rows that show the meaning of the information in the grid. Someone that cannot see the table cannot make these visual associations, so proper markup must be used to make a programmatic association between elements within the table. When the proper HTML markup is in place, users of screen readers can navigate through data tables one cell at a time, and they will hear the column and row headers spoken to them." - WebAIM
