OPT and OPT STEM Reporting Requirements
All students on OPT (Post Completion, STEM, and Cap-Gap) are required to report any changes within 10 days. Failure to comply with any of the reporting requirements constitutes a violation of your legal F-1 status.
SEVP PORTAL- Self Reporting Tool
The SEVP Portal is a tool that F-1 students engaged in post-completion OPT and STEM OPT Extension can choose to use to report certain updates to SEVIS.
You will receive an email from SEVP to create a portal at the same time as your EAD authorization start date.

If you are unable to login to the Portal, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your full name and SEVIS number to request a Portal reset.
Please send a copy of your EAD card to CIE.
Post-Completion OPT Reporting Requirements (12 Months)
Please make sure all information is reported within 10 days of the change. You will not be able to report any changes after 10 days and must contact CIE
What can I report via my SEVP Portal account while on Post Completion OPT?
You can update your residential information, your contact information and all required employer information. At this time, you cannot upload a copy of your offer letter or EAD card.
Listed below is all required information
- Your Full Name
- Your NETID and/or SEVIS number
- Your Residential Address
- Your email address
- Your phone number
- Your employer (company) name
- Your employer (company) address
- Your job title
- Your employment start date (mm/dd/yyyy)
- One or two sentences on how your job is related to your major
- Whether full time or part time? *Full time is any amount over 20 hours a week
- End date of previous employer if any (mm/dd/yyyy)
- Copy of your EAD card
OPT STEM Validation Report Requirements (24 months)
Students with an approved 24-month OPT extension must make a validation report to CIE every six months starting from the date the extension begins and ending when employment terminates or at the end of 24 months
What can I update in my SEVP Portal while on OPT STEM?
You have the ability to update your residential address and contact information via the Portal. You are not able to update employment as the I-983 is mandatory.
What do I have to validate?
You MUST log into your SEVP Portal and make sure all information is current and up-to-date. You can edit your address, email and phone number. If any employer information needs to be updated, you must submit an update I-983 Form.
I-983 Evaluation- if you are at the 12-month or 24-month mark, you must also submit the evaluation page of the I-983.
How do I submit my validation report?
Once you have completed the above, please send email@example.com an email with the following:
- Your Name
- Your SEVIS number
- Confirmation you have checked your SEVP Portal and everything is current
- Request your validation report be submitted in SEVIS by an international student advisor
- Submit Evaluation page (if required)
What if I need to update or change information in the SEVP Portal?
If your contact information or residential address required changes, please update them in your SEVP Portal. Any employer information that needs to be corrected, please submit a new I-983 to firstname.lastname@example.org
If you are at your 12 month or 24 month mark of your STEM OPT, you are required to submit a signed page 5 of the I-983 at the same time as your validation report.
In addition to the validation reports, students on a STEM extension must notify the CIE within 10 days of any changes to any of the above information.
