Recent DACA Decision and Our Response

Yesterday, undocumented students received another round of unsettling news as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decided to uphold the State of Texas, et al., v. United States (2021) ruling against the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program. This action creates uncertainty and unnecessary stress for future Dreamers. I denounce this decision and remind our undocumented students and employees that there are many who stand with you.  I am hopeful that our nation finds a way to move past political maneuvers to find solutions that are just and permanent.

I’d like to share the statement issued today by CSU Interim Chancellor Jolene Koester. In addition, she, along with University of California President Michael Drake and California Community Colleges Interim Chancellor Daisy Gonzalez, issued a joint statement. Like these leaders, I vow to continue to work with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Rob Bonta and our students, faculty and staff to advocate for permanent pathways to citizenship so undocumented Californians can pursue their academic and professional goals without fear of deportation.​

Here are a few of the services available to our undocumented community members who may need support:

• The Undocumented Student Resource Center that opened earlier this year can provide information, referrals, and community. 
• The California State University provides legal support services, free to CSU students and employees.
• Counseling Services are also available to provide assistance to students in need.

We may not be able to affect decisions in other parts of the nation, but I know that right here at Cal State East Bay, we stand against racial injustices of any kind to support all our students as they pursue their dreams.
